The main goal of the CASA workshop - associated to the Thirteenth International Conference on Intelligent Virtual Agents (IVA 2013) - is to bring together researchers from different disciplines to discuss the function of Computers as Social Actors (CASA). Social Actorship refers to systems that present social awareness and intentionality qualities, and possibly some form of embodiment. In fact, it has been shown that people apply social rules to many aspects of human-computer interaction (e.g., in [Nass, Moon, & Fogg1995, Nass, Steuer, & Tauber1994]) independently of whether or not the system are given explicitly anthropomorphic interfaces. Humans, when interacting with CASA can be led to feel empathy, and experience a diverse set of emotional reactions. On the other hand, CASA could also in a certain, perhaps limited way, show certain emotions in reaction to human emotions.

In this workshop, we
aim at discussing challenges associated with “Computers as Social Actors”. We
will address the development of technological components, design methodologies,
and the adoption and take up of CASA solutions and services. The main emphasis
is to exploit many different human-machine and human-human interaction
technologies and methodologies addressing several different concrete scenarios.
By discussing different approaches to social actorship deployed in concrete
systems presented at the workshop, we aim to identify key characteristics of
social actorship.
The CASA Workshop opens
up a new topic, and has not previously run in any other conference.
The CASA Workshop
will focus on three main areas of investigation: theory, practice and market.
Starting from theoretical approaches and practical evaluation of the usage of
CASA systems in real settings a roadmap to market will be also provided.
